Full Review of the Kurt Kinetic Rock and Roll PRO Resistance Unit
The Kinetic Rock & Roll Turbo Trainer is designed to make your stationary bike training experience a little bit more realistic by allowing the bike to move around underneath you.
As you can see by the pictures (once youve got past the neon green shine) the Kinetic Rock & Roll Turbo Trainer is set up slightly differently to most other turbo trainers out there. The design is meant to allow your bike to move laterally while training. This has a few advantages over static training.
Advantages of the Kinetic Rock & Roll Bike Trainer
- Feels more realistic
- Trains core muscles and technique and not just your legs, heart and lungs
- Makes indoor training a bit more interesting allowing you to do longer sessions without dying of boredom.
As far as these points are concerned I can confirm that it does indeed feel more realistic. Its not anywhere near the same as riding on rollers but it is a significant improvement over a static turbo trainer. Standing up and sprinting is a lot more realistic.
Im not too sure about the claim that it trains core muscles and technique. Youre still firmly locked in place and theres no chance of you toppling over if you mess things up. However it can bounce around a bit if your technique is very poor which could possibly help in improving it.
The Kinetic Rock & Roll Turbo Trainer> does however make indoor training more bearable. I found that I could easily go for two or three times as long while training before boredom set in. This, as Im sure you understand, can be priceless in itself.
I initially thought that the flexibility would compromise the stability of the trainer but I can happily report that there is no chance of tipping over when cycling.
Kinetic Rock & Roll Setup
On a more basic note, setting up the trainer is simple and you will be up and running quickly.
As with the other trainers in the range the Rock and Roll is large and sturdy. While this means that you wont be taking this with you to races to warm up, you do have a well built sturdy product that will take a lot of abuse. It is quite a bit wider than normal trainers so keep that in mind if you are short for space.
The actual ride quality is good. You can purchase the Rock and Roll frame with any of the Kurt Kinetic Resistance units. We tested the model with the PRO unit and definitely feel as if it is the best choice. If money is a big issue however you can save by getting the Kinetic Rock & Roll Turbo Trainer.
The unit is therefore, as with other Kurt Kinetic bike trainers, leak-proof.
The resistance curve on the PRO unit is great and the flexibility of it means that you can really tailor your training sessions to your every need. Using your gears you can get a very smooth and varied training session.
As stated before the movement allowed by the trainer does make the entire experience a lot more realistic and it will give you incentive to stay on your trainer for longer which is always a good thing when training for out-of-the-saddle hill climbs.
What we think about the Kinetic Rock & Roll Trainer
Overall the Kinetic Rock & Roll Turbo Trainer is a really innovative take on the traditional bike trainer. While for some people the ability to rock will be a defining feature, others will prefer to stick with the feeling of a static trainer. Its certainly great if you want to train realistic hill climbs. The best price we could find it for is £404.99 from Evans Cycles. Open the Evans Cycles Online Store here to see this deal.
Pros: Ability to move, Realistic feeling, Good for training hill-climbs, Sturdy, Keeps cycling more interesting.
Cons: Large, Heavy, Fairly pricey, Hard to tell if it will last as long as a static trainer
