Let’s face it, Minoura are known for their high quality trainers, and the Magteqs Twin has just been added to their product range. It evolved from the V-270 after professionals asked for more resistance. At 640 watts, this trainer gives 40% more power than its predecessor. The added power makes it ideal for professional riders alike, but the 13 resistance steps also makes it useable for the average rider looking for a good workout session.

Features

Not only does the Magteqs Twin give at least 40% more power than other trainers in the V-Series range, it also delivers improved stability and noise control. The use of Advanced Magnetic Technology resistance (AMT) and smaller tubes makes it one of the quietest trainers on the market. It has a wider frame for improved stability and folds for easy transport and storage. The trainer has smooth transition between the 13 power settings, allowing it for use by riders of varying abilities. Features like a urethane coated lever and clamp band for improved grip show the high level of design quality which is a trademark of Minoura products. The magnetic resistance unit weighs 2 kilograms but gives the same performance as a 2.7 kilogram model, due to more weight being put on the outside of the flywheel. It’s easy to set up using the quick release hub clamping system: just secure the bike then adjust resistance with the quick release pedal.

Disadvantages

The quick release design can only be used with the supplied skewer. You need to replace the skewer on your bike with it each time you use the trainer. It also won’t work with a standard hub nut fitting. The flywheel and rotor get very hot and shouldn’t be touched for 15mins after your workout. In addition to this, this trainer can’t be used with Watt Master or any internal transmission bike. It’s a manual trainer, meaning there are no programs or software that may appeal to the more technically minded cyclist. The price could also be considered a drawback for some as this is expensive compared to other turbo trainers, but if you are a strong cyclist looking for a machine that will push you harder and further, then this would be a good long-term investment.

Advantages

The biggest advantage of the Magteqs Twin is the level of resistance. It is designed for the powerful rider, who will find it easier to work on their strength and fitness without undue strain on the trainer. The quick set up makes it good for short training sessions. The low noise makes longer sessions a lot more tolerable, especially if you are using it at home.

Let’s face it, this is a well designed and manufactured piece of equipment. It is better suited to strong riders who will get the full benefit of the added resistance through regular use, than weekend riders who only use a turbo trainer occasionally. The beauty of the Tacx Genius Multiplayer T2000 is that it can turn outdoor training to indoors, and still keep the high entertainment value and enjoyment. This virtual reality (VR) trainer uses Tacx Trainer software 3.0 to provide riders with the same cycling experiences that they would find when biking outdoors. This particular trainer is the most expensive model from Tacx as its hard-wearing frame and computer-driven flywheel makes the ride feel more realistic than any other trainer on the market.

Features

The Tacx Genius Multiplayer sports the BlackTrack steering frame which matches the handle bar movement to that of the virtual track on screen, further enhancing the lifelike experience. The braking system is what separates this trainer from the others in the range as the motor brake allows it to simulate tough rocky climbs and sharp descents in order to provide a real and lifelike experience.

This fancy brake is not just to enhance your riding experience though, it has been designed to reduce your energy consumption too. The brake releases heat while you are riding, this is converted into a current reducing the amount of energy the trainer uses. One thing to keep in mind is that this trainer does have to be hooked up to a PC (via USB) and the mains, so consumption would ordinarily be quite high without this nifty feature.

ANT technology is compatible with the trainer so users can combine cadence meters or other ANT applications as well.

The Tacx Trainer software 3.0 is the second best thing about the T2000, after the braking system, it provides riders with five different terrains for every type of biking and films for a number of classic cycling stages such as the Tour de France. If you’d rather train on your own rides, GPS makes that easy, so you no longer have to worry about missing a session due to bad weather. Another added benefit is that you can also compete against other riders online and in real time, creating a virtual race environment. I find this to be a useful feature as it (and my ego) force me to go harder and longer because I want to win!

Disadvantages

Despite costing over £1000 and incorporating a whole host of really great technology, Tacx forgot one important thing when manufacturing this trainer and that is the durability of design. The Bushido model had a problem with the weak plastic construction of the mount, and although I imagine this was a known design problem, this was not rectified on the Genius which is strange. This is a huge shame really as it lets down what is otherwise an amazing virtual reality trainer.

Advantages

Let’s face it, if you have the money, this trainer is all that and a little bit more. You can never quite beat the feeling of grinding the real roads with your bike but Tacx certainly do come very close. The best price we could find it for is £1079.95 from Merlin Cycles. Let me just say from the start that the Tacx Genius T2020 is a great piece of equipment and has grown in popularity thanks to the advanced software and front wheel support. This trainer provides users with a virtual training programme which makes training in the privacy of your own home all the more lifelike. However and perhaps strangely, it does not have a multiplayer license, which is a bit of a disappointment.

Features

One of the best things about the T2020 is the software that comes with it to make your training a realistic and lifelike experience. Nothing beats actually climbing the hills, getting out there and getting muddy, but that’s not always an option in this temperamental climate. Fortunately, the VR software provides the challenges and variety that we are after without the hassle of getting wet.

The version 3.0 software provides riders with five different animated terrains for just about any type of biking as well as a number of films of classic cycling stages such as the Tour de France. If you prefer to ride what you know, 3D maps and GPS can link up to provide you with the tracks that you use most.

In addition to providing you with a number of terrain options, this trainer will also give you accurate readings of your heart rate, speed, power, and cadence while you are on the go.

Usability

The wireless motor brake and flywheel work together to generate really high power at relatively low speeds, and are able to recreate the climbs and descents that you would experience whilst out on a ride.

The turbo trainer is very easy to use; it needs to be plugged into an electricity mains socket and the PC via a USB cable. However, thanks to the wireless communication between the brake, user interface and PC, the rest of the trainer is cable-free.

Disadvantages

I am a huge fan of this trainer but if I had to point out a disadvantage I would say that it is the price. Although there are lots of features and technology built into the trainer, the price could be seen as a barrier to many of us. But, it does elevate your training sessions to a new and diverse level so it really just depends on where your priorities lie.

Advantages

The software is certainly the main attraction to this trainer as rather than staring at four blank walls, you get to enjoy the sights of animated races and terrains, providing additional stimulation and motivation. Would I recommend this? Without a doubt, this is a great piece of equipment that makes indoor training both interesting and invigorating.

3LC Sprinting – Train with the Manx

Never able to pass up an opportunity to try a new turbo training video I was pretty excited when the 3LC Sprinting DVD arrived in the post.

The DVD provides a simple menu to get started and you can choose to either get stuck straight into the session or you can watch the introduction which gives you a quick overview of the training session, including a detailed explanation of the on screen dashboard. More on this to follow later. The end of the intro video gives you an overview of the training session. I like to know what it is I’m getting myself into before I start training, so here it is:

5 minutes ‘isolated leg training’
5 minutes rolling sprints
5 minutes steady
9 minutes ‘lead outs’
1 minute ‘final sprint’
10 minute warm down
3LC Stretching

The training session is 60 minutes in total from the moment you press play, which I am going to do right now, having set myself up on our big screen projector here at TTR.com HQ.

For starters, the video fades into the training room with a number of trainers and cyclists ready and waiting to get started. The atmosphere is set by the whirring of the trainers and the friendly banter between cyclists. Even Mark Cavendish is sitting on one of the bikes chatting to those around him. This whole scene is pretty good at getting you fired up and in the mood.

The ‘coach’ calls out for everyone to get ready at which point the slick dashboard jumps up on the screen for the first time. The countdown timer to the end of the session has been running since the beginning of the video, in case you were wondering, and sits unobtrusively in the top right-hand corner of the screen.

The On-Screen Dashboard

The central dashboard prominently displays a timer that counts down each interval. On the left side of this countdown are the details of the current interval with the next interval shown on the right hand side. The information displayed for each interval, includes the type of interval, i.e. “warm up”, the RPM, the length of the interval and the RPE, the rate of perceived effort which gives you an idea of how hard you should be going. I find this data to be pretty comprehensive and enough for you to push yourself and to make the most of your session.

A picture speaks more than 50 odd words in this case so here’s the dashboard:

The camera changes and angles help to motivate you and keep you in the flow as it switches between panning in front of the group to close-ups of the bikes on the track, as well as to the rather effective “race face” shot. One little thing that I did miss was music. I understand that there’s a good bit of talking and advice going on in the video but like most of you, I always train with music, it helps me push harder. It’s a small thing but I think it would make a difference.

You’re not alone…

This coupled with the coach’s running commentary and observations force you to push yourself that little bit harder. For me, this is what sets 3LC videos apart from the rest as you really feel that you have a trainer with you and you are given constant guidance and support. I mean, you are even told when to change gear and each interval change is accompanied by a sound alert so you don’t have to worry about missing anything.

The whole training session is mainly cadence based so you don’t have to worry about keeping track of your heart rate. This is nice as it makes it easier to follow and anything that makes things easier to do makes me more likely to do them.

The coach counts you down to the first sprint and everyone gives everything they have. This is followed by 5 lots of 10 second all out sprints interspersed with 50 second recoveries. The isolated leg training intervals are great as they really help improve strength, form and upward pull. The seated sprints are 15 seconds long with 45 second recoveries and I’ll be honest after these I’m really starting to feel it.

At various points in the video, Mark Cavendish shares his thoughts on turbos as well as his sprinting style, while you are training, which is a really nice addition.

The 45 second time trial followed by sprint intervals are really intense but I can really feel myself working, the recovery is a relief (it always is). I also liked the lead out session, building progressively higher and higher until we get to the final sprint which is a minute long, the only thing keeping me going here is the verbal motivation telling me I can see the finish line (which I can’t, but I’m just trusting the 3LC team here). I am happy to see everyone else in the video grimacing and sweating as well though, I’m not alone in my pain.

Once you’ve warmed down you can watch the stretching videos which are another nice feature as we all know how important stretching is. Having it included on the DVD means you can just follow the lead which helps with good form.

The Verdict

Overall this is a well produced complete training session and is as close to having an actual personal trainer as you’ll ever have in your garage or living room. I think it is a great investment and really goes a long way to making your indoor training session as enjoyable as possible. I certainly feel closer to Mark Cavendish now that we’ve trained together and hearing his insights is a great distraction while you are putting yourself through the paces. 5/5 this will definitely improve your sprinting. The Elite NovoMag Trainer is one the newest additions to the Elite range of trainers and is designed to deliver optimum levels of performance. With its impressive design and solid build, this trainer is certainly a strong contender and will give many other trainers on the market a run for their money.

Features

Elite are well-known for their innovation, and the new ‘Novo’ frame patented under the company name is in keeping with this aim. The ‘Novo’ frame moves the resistance unit to the rear of the wheel which effectively positions the rear wheel of the bike closer to the ground thus greatly increasing the overall stability. In doing this, Elite have eliminated the need for a riser block which in turn gives your training session a much more natural and realistic feel.

Cleverly, the NovoMag comes with adaptors which means that anything from a BMX with a 24 inch wheel to a MTB with a 29 inch wheel will be able to use this trainer. It is one of the few trainers available on the market with an adapter included in the package which just shows that Elite are paying attention to their customers. You may need to fiddle with the adapter’s tightening mechanism when first using it to make sure that it is not too loose or too tight but after being used a few times, it will settle in nicely.

Spare QR skewers have also been included in the box for those using Mavic rims and the like.

Usability

This trainer provides a very lifelike cycling experience offering 5-user adjustable levels of resistance (which can be adjusted by the ergonomically designed handle). You can immediately feel the change in resistance as you move through the gears which is great for interval training. That being said, having only 5 levels of resistance may not be enough variation for the more seasoned cyclists and is something to consider when buying it.

The clamping mechanism inherent in the trainer allows the fast fixing of the rear wheel so you are ready to go in no time.

In addition to this, it comes with an elastogel roller which reduces the noise by 50% and the tire abrasion by about 20% in comparison to aluminum rollers on the market. I would not go so far as to say that this trainer is completely silent but it is pretty quiet comparatively.

Easy set up and storage

Unlike many of the user manuals that seem to be written in Greek, the user manual that comes with this trainer is logically ordered and easy to follow. It has quick releases on both the axle holders and the resistance unit which makes setting it up quick and effortless. Similarly, after training the trainer can be folded into a small practical size which is easy to store.

Final Word

The NovoMag Trainer is true testimony to the fact that Elite have been paying attention to what their customers want and need. Not only is it easy to set-up and store, but it is also adaptable to a number of tire types which offers a whole new level of flexibility. I am a huge fan of training on rollers as they allow you to train your legs as well as focus on strengthening your core which is key to your overall performance and endurance. After a month of putting them to test, I can safely say that the Elite Arion Mag Parabolic Resistance Rollers are a great set of rollers and provide a very real cycling experience.

Features

These rollers are Elite’s second generation of resistance rollers and are in effect a step up from the Elite V-Arion Parabolic Inertial Rollers. Of a course, a step up in performance and quality also means a step up in price but they are worth the extra investment.

The first thing to mention is that the injection-moulded resin frame is tougher and significantly lighter than its predecessors. That is not to say that they will not withstand abuse because they are certainly built for the challenge. To date my rollers have been setup in parking lots, tossed in the back of a van and have been rigorously used on a daily basis.

The narrow-gauge parabolic roller drums are situated at an optimal distance from each other and are perfectly balanced to ensure a super smooth ride.

The integral frame step allows for easy mounting and dismounting and eliminates the need to set the rollers up in a door frame or next to a wall for support. Clever!

3-Speed magnetic resistance

These rollers have a 3-speed magnetic unit built into the middle roller which offers a variety of training and resistance options. What this means however is that resistance levels can only be adjusted when you are actually on your bike on the rollers but this is not the end of the world.

What I like about these rollers is the fact that they are so quiet when in use. No matter how hard you work them and how much you increase the resistance, they will not drown out the sound of your training video or music which is always a good thing.

Convenient storage

These rollers are excellent “grab and go” rollers as they are easy to setup, store and transport. At the end of your session, just fold them up and store them under the bed or in the closet leaving your training area clutter-free.

Final thoughts

Yes, they are on the top-end of the roller price scale but they are well-worth the investment. They are well-built, lightweight and will deal with anything that you throw at them. The 3-speed resistance is fantastic and will have you pushing yourself before you know it. They are a perfect training tool for high intensity sessions (as opposed to endurance outdoor sessions), and great for when you just can’t or don’t feel like getting outside. They have produced 5 different DVDs so far which are each designed to help you train for a specific discipline. Whether you need to improve your sprinting, climbing or time trialing you will find a DVD to suit you.

The format of the videos is studio based with plenty of guidance and motivation from the pros and from what we’ve seen and heard so far it looks pretty good.

As soon as they are available we will be getting our hands on a copy and will post a full review in the training video section when we do.

This looks like a great alternative to the archive footage based training videos out there and there aren’t any better to measure yourself against than Mark Cavendish.

The Elite SuperCrono Forte is a digital turbo trainer that offers a combination of function and style which are both important for cyclists. The trainer is a great piece of equipment as it is very accurate in terms of the readings it gives and is easy to use. You can control the resistance level by switching between a wide range (16 to be precise) of resistance levels.

Control is all-important for the serious cyclist whether in a race or during training. This trainer takes care of this critical need not just with the 16 resistance levels but also with an ANT-coded (two way) head unit. Thanks to this you get complete control from the bars, as you can peer over at important data related to the training session as you work out.

You can train through 3 modes:

Constant power (Manually adjust the required power, trainer adjusts resistance accordingly)
Levels (Choose from 16, manually adjust speed to alter resistance)
Present Programs (Choose from 10, the trainer automatically adjusts resistance)
