The DVD provides a simple menu to get started and you can choose to either get stuck straight into the session or you can watch the introduction which gives you a quick overview of the training session, including a detailed explanation of the on screen dashboard. More on this to follow later. The end of the intro video gives you an overview of the training session. I like to know what it is I’m getting myself into before I start training, so here it is:

Training Session Stucture:

• 10 minutes progressive warm up
• 5 minutes ‘power blasts’
• 5 minutes ‘isolated leg training’
• 5 minutes seated sprints
• 5 minutes ‘isolated leg training’
• 5 minutes rolling sprints
• 5 minutes steady
• 9 minutes ‘lead outs’
• 1 minute ‘final sprint’
• 10 minute warm down
• 3LC Stretching

The training session is 60 minutes in total from the moment you press play, which I am going to do right now, having set myself up on our big screen projector here at TTR.com HQ.

For starters, the video fades into the training room with a number of trainers and cyclists ready and waiting to get started. The atmosphere is set by the whirring of the trainers and the friendly banter between cyclists. Even Mark Cavendish is sitting on one of the bikes chatting to those around him. This whole scene is pretty good at getting you fired up and in the mood.

The ‘coach’ calls out for everyone to get ready at which point the slick dashboard jumps up on the screen for the first time. The countdown timer to the end of the session has been running since the beginning of the video, in case you were wondering, and sits unobtrusively in the top right-hand corner of the screen.

The On-Screen Dashboard

The central dashboard prominently displays a timer that counts down each interval. On the left side of this countdown are the details of the current interval with the next interval shown on the right hand side. The information displayed for each interval, includes the type of interval, i.e. “warm up”, the RPM, the length of the interval and the RPE, the rate of perceived effort which gives you an idea of how hard you should be going. I find this data to be pretty comprehensive and enough for you to push yourself and to make the most of your session.

A picture speaks more than 50 odd words in this case so here’s the dashboard:

The camera changes and angles help to motivate you and keep you in the flow as it switches between panning in front of the group to close-ups of the bikes on the track, as well as to the rather effective “race face” shot. One little thing that I did miss was music. I understand that there’s a good bit of talking and advice going on in the video but like most of you, I always train with music, it helps me push harder. It’s a small thing but I think it would make a difference.

You’re not alone…

This coupled with the coach’s running commentary and observations force you to push yourself that little bit harder. For me, this is what sets 3LC videos apart from the rest as you really feel that you have a trainer with you and you are given constant guidance and support. I mean, you are even told when to change gear and each interval change is accompanied by a sound alert so you don’t have to worry about missing anything.

The whole training session is mainly cadence based so you don’t have to worry about keeping track of your heart rate. This is nice as it makes it easier to follow and anything that makes things easier to do makes me more likely to do them.

The coach counts you down to the first sprint and everyone gives everything they have. This is followed by 5 lots of 10 second all out sprints interspersed with 50 second recoveries. The isolated leg training intervals are great as they really help improve strength, form and upward pull. The seated sprints are 15 seconds long with 45 second recoveries and I’ll be honest after these I’m really starting to feel it.

At various points in the video, Mark Cavendish shares his thoughts on turbos as well as his sprinting style, while you are training, which is a really nice addition.

The 45 second time trial followed by sprint intervals are really intense but I can really feel myself working, the recovery is a relief (it always is). I also liked the lead out session, building progressively higher and higher until we get to the final sprint which is a minute long, the only thing keeping me going here is the verbal motivation telling me I can see the finish line (which I can’t, but I’m just trusting the 3LC team here). I am happy to see everyone else in the video grimacing and sweating as well though, I’m not alone in my pain.

Once you’ve warmed down you can watch the stretching videos which are another nice feature as we all know how important stretching is. Having it included on the DVD means you can just follow the lead which helps with good form.

The Verdict

Overall this is a well produced complete training session and is as close to having an actual personal trainer as you’ll ever have in your garage or living room. I think it is a great investment and really goes a long way to making your indoor training session as enjoyable as possible. I certainly feel closer to Mark Cavendish now that we’ve trained together and hearing his insights is a great distraction while you are putting yourself through the paces. 5/5 this will definitely improve your sprinting. The Elite NovoMag Trainer is one the newest additions to the Elite range of trainers and is designed to deliver optimum levels of performance. With its impressive design and solid build, the NovoMag is certainly a strong trainer contender and will give many other trainers on the market a run for their money.

Innovative design

Elite are well-known for their innovation, and the new ‘Novo’ frame patented under the company name is in keeping with this aim. The ‘Novo’ frame moves the resistance unit to the rear of the wheel which effectively positions the rear wheel of the bicycle closer to the ground thus greatly increasing the overall stability. In doing this, Elite have eliminated the need for a riser block which in turn gives your training session a much more natural and realistic feel.

Cleverly, the NovoMag comes with adaptors which means that anything from a BMX with a 24 inch wheel to a MTB with a 29 inch wheel will be able to use this trainer. The NovoMag is one of the few trainers available on the market with an adapter included in the package which just shows that Elite are paying attention to their customers. You may need to fiddle with the adapter’s tightening mechanism when first using it to make sure that it is not too loose or too tight but after being used a few times, it will settle in nicely.

Elite have also included spare QR skewers in the box for those using Mavic rims and the like.

The NovoMag Performs well

The NovoMag provides a very lifelike cycling experience offering 5-user adjustable levels of resistance (which can be adjusted by the ergonomically designed handle). You can immediately feel the change in resistance as you move through the gears which is great for interval training. That being said, having only 5 levels of resistance may not be enough variation for the more seasoned cyclists and is something to consider when buying a trainer.

The clamping mechanism inherent in the trainer allows the fast fixing of the rear wheel so you are ready to go in no time.

In addition to this, the NovoMag comes with an elastogel roller which reduces the noise by 50% and the tire abrasion by about 20% in comparison to aluminum rollers on the market. I would not go so far as to say that the NovoMag is completely silent but it is pretty quiet comparatively.

Easy set up and storage

Unlike many of the user manuals that seem to be written in Greek, the user manual that comes with this trainer is logically ordered and easy to follow. The NovoMag has quick releases on both the axle holders and the resistance unit which makes setting it up quick and effortless. Similarly, after training the trainer can be folded into a small practical size which is easy to store.

Final Word

The NovoMag Trainer is true testimony to the fact that Elite have been paying attention to what their customers want and need. Not only is it easy to set-up and store, but it is also adaptable to a number of tire types which offers a whole new level of flexibility. I am a huge fan of training on rollers as they allow you to train your legs as well as focus on strengthening your core which is key to your overall performance and endurance. After a month of putting them to test, I can safely say that the Elite Arion Mag Parabolic Resistance Rollers are a great set of rollers and provide a very real cycling experience.

Built to last

The Elite Arion Mag Parabolic Resistance Rollers are Elite’s second generation of resistance rollers and are in effect a step up from the Elite V-Arion Parabolic Inertial Rollers. Of a course, a step up in performance and quality also means a step up in price but these rollers are worth the extra investment.

The first thing to mention is that the injection-moulded resin frame is tougher and significantly lighter than its predecessors. That is not to say that they will not withstand abuse because they are certainly built for the challenge. To date my rollers have been setup in parking lots, tossed in the back of a van and have been rigorously used on a daily basis.

The narrow-gauge parabolic roller drums are situated at an optimal distance from each other and are perfectly balanced to ensure a super smooth ride.

The integral frame step allows for easy mounting and dismounting and eliminates the need to set the rollers up in a door frame or next to a wall for support. Clever!

3-Speed magnetic resistance

The Elite Arion Mag Parabolic Resistance Rollers has a 3-speed magnetic unit built into the middle roller which offers a variety of training and resistance options. What this means however is that resistance levels can only be adjusted when you are actually on your bike on the rollers but this is not the end of the world.

What I like about these rollers is the fact that they are so quiet when in use. No matter how hard you work them and how much you increase the resistance, they will not drown out the sound of your training video or music which is always a good thing.

Convenient storage

These rollers are excellent “grab and go” rollers as they are easy to setup, store and transport. At the end of your session, just fold them up and store them under the bed or in the closet leaving your training area clutter-free.

Final thoughts

Yes, the Elite Arion Mag Parabolic Resistance Rollers are on the top-end of the roller price scale but they are well-worth the investment. They are well-built, lightweight and will deal with anything that you throw at them. The 3-speed resistance is fantastic and will have you pushing yourself before you know it. They are a perfect training tool for high intensity sessions (as opposed to endurance outdoor sessions), and great for when you just can’t or don’t feel like getting outside. The Good, The Bad and The Verdict

Pros

The most important praise for the Elite SuperCrono Forte will obviously be its accurate functionality as well as ease of use. The advanced sensors really do an excellent job of calculating the cadence wirelessly. The trainer is also very quiet, so it’s not a disturbance when used indoors. Most of the features of the Elite SuperCrono Forte can be considered a pro when you are looking for a trainer. It’s also easy to store and transport the trainer as the steel frame folds comfortably.

Cons

If you’re not careful, there can be some discolouring on the metal frame which can ruin the look of the trainer. Furthermore, the price tag can put this trainer out of reach for some people.

Verdict

All in all, the Elite SuperCrono Forte is a reliable and competent companion for the serious cyclist. If it suits your budget and your style, this trainer will definitely increase your chances of impressing someone on the Tour de France. This is one of epicRIDES very well produced cycle training videos and if you live anywhere that isn’t California then you’ll really appreciate the feeling of cycling in the sun.

We set this one up in our trainer test centre on the big projector and it was fantastic. It helped that it was a typical English autumn day, it was cold, windy and wet outside so perfect for a nice session on the trainer.

Ride Through the Glorius Californian Sun

The video, which we received as a download – DVDs are available – consisted of a ride around the Great Western Loop which is a mainstay for cyclists in and around San Diego. It is a mixture of easy and hard climbs, easy and technical descents and a few nice flats thrown in for good measure.

You first get a chance to meet the three riders who will be putting themselves through the paces with you. Adam, Brian and Ginger introduce themselves and give their thoughts on the ride ahead which is a nice touch and gets you in the mood. It’s also great to put a name to a face and to a back which you will be following for the next hour and a half.

The graphic overview of the route gives you a good idea of the different sections and the general route you will be cycling. You also get a good overview of the elevation of the route.

The ride is split into six sections.

1. 5 minute warm up
2. 20 minute climb
3. 25 minute hard climb
4. 20 minute interval climbs
5. 15 minute interval climbs
6. 5 minute cool down

High Quality Video and a Useful Dashboard

The video quality is good and even works on a big screen. Everything is shot in 16:9 format and feels quite cinematic, especially on our projector. The footage alternates between following the riders, an “on bike” camera and cycling out ahead on your own. The footage is steady, even on the bike so you can always take in the scenery and don’t feel sea sick.

Throughout the whole ride there is a dashboard across the bottom of the screen which shows useful things such as the average gradient, training zone, terrain profile and a countdown timer so you always know where and when you are.

The music is ok, it certainly has a good beat and keeps you pounding the pedals relentlessly. It’s all original music so you probably won’t recognise any of it. At times I would have liked a slightly better build up to a climax, especially when reaching the top of the climbs but overall I can’t complain. I suppose the music does reflect the long hard slog at these points.

As far as the actual ride itself is concerned, it starts off in a slightly built up area but that quickly gives way to the Californian countryside.

There is an introduction to each section on screen along with a description of the route and useful tips such as:

This sort of thing is great when you just want to train without thinking too much, just follow instructions and pedal.

The second section starts out gently and increases in grade slowly but surely until you near the top where the climbing gets a bit more serious. This is followed by a fast descent to Loveland Reservoir. The scenery is beautiful and the views of the surroundings are stunning.

Count Your Way Down to the Summit

There is a climb countdown clock which times you to the summit which is a nice feature and really keeps you pushing.

The hard climb takes us up to 2600 feet which is over 2200 foot from the start, you can certainly feel it by the time you’ve reached the top.

The tip is to save a little energy for the last 60 second push. Nothing is quite as satisfying as getting to the top of a steep climb, even if it is only virtually. If you were hoping for spectacular views as you reach the top you will be slightly disappointed as the top is quite flat. Luckily there are views just around the corner in the next section.

Section four allows for some good intervals. Use the climbs to go all out and the descents for recovery as you fly past some of the best scenery so far, with the mountain on your right and the open valley to your left. It’s stunning and makes me want to live in San Diego (well sort of).

By this point you can literally feel yourself soaking up the Californian sun, which is very cheering, especially if like us you are based in the UK where the sun never seems to shine (during winter anyhow).

I’m pretty sure I beat the other three riders to the top of the last climb in this section and it felt good, very good.

The next section is also an interval section but it is shorter which means one thing: Work harder! The scenery also changes, the road narrows and becomes lined by trees which is quite nice, because I for one am killing myself in the Californian sun and even virtual shade is helping me cool off. There are some great views again on the descents with green fields stretching out around you. The camera does occasionally look at the views so you are actually able to enjoy the scenery as much as you would if you were there.

The final section allows for a gentle ride to cool down and in the words of the video “a well earned fruit smoothie”. While I love a good smoothie, all the sun and beautiful scenery makes me feel like I’m on holiday, I’ll have to force myself not to go and grab a nice cold beer. Must stay strong!

Conlcusion

Overall this is a great ride. The production quality and camera work is professional and realistic. The one area I’d personally make a change is in the music, but that is a matter of personal preference and the music certainly isn’t bad.

I’d recommend this as a medium–hard to hard ride, although you can obviously push yourself as much or as little as you want to on your trainer. epicRIDES have a good choice of rides available across the US so if you’ve always wanted to ride in the USA but have never been able to …now is a great time to start. The Elite Mag Speed Aluminium Trainer is a new turbo trainer by Elite which is aimed at entry level indoor cyclists.

Right out of the box the unit is preassembeld which is always a plus and means you can get cycling away quickly. when you don’t need to use it the Elite Mag Speed Aluminium Trainer folds flat, which is good for easy storage, especially if you are training with limited space.
