Full Review of the Blackburn Tech Fluid Trainer
The Blackburn Tech Fluid Trainer is a very solid bike trainer that is considerably cheaper than similar fluid turbo trainers.
While there are people who deride Blackburn trainers as a matter of principle you do have to remember that in life you get what you pay for, just in this case, its actually quite a lot.
The Blackburn Tech Fluid is solid
The Blackburn Tech Fluid Bike Trainer is a large trainer. Dont be fooled by the pictures it is both wider and lower than most bike trainers on the market. This has the advantage that it is rock solid you can jump up and down on your bike all day and youre not going to rock it much.
I stress that this could also be seen as a disadvantage as my friend Mitch quite likes his trainer to move around a bit to make it feel a bit more realistic. Either way, whatever you prefer, the Blackburn Tech Fluid is solid as a rock. Im guessing you could chuck this out a window in a fit of trainer-rage and it would possibly survive.
Blackburn Tech Fluid – no need for front riser
Once youve got the trainer set up (pretty easy) you can adjust the legs so that your rear wheel is just inch (approx 0.5 cm) off the ground thus negating the need for a front wheel riser (or block of wood). This further adds to the Blackburns value and is a feature I really like.
Blackburn Tech Fluid – Noise
The Blackburn Tech Fluid Bike Trainer is not particularly quiet compared to other fluid trainers but I suppose this is one of the compromises you have to make for the price. The fluid warms up fairly fast and after a few initial vibrations the operation is as smooth as you could want.
Youre certainly going to struggle to out-power this trainer and I certainly didnt manage it. The resistance curve is smooth but quite steep and wont appeal to weaker riders and beginners.
Its great for standing up out of the saddle and giving it a good beating which means you can really get into your sprint interval training.
While at this price I would be wary about buying a fluid trainer due to possible leaks you do get a lifetime warranty from Blackburn so if any issues do occur you should be able to get a replacement.
Ive not had any firsthand experience with Blackburns customer service but from what I have heard they replace faulty models quickly and in some cases with upgrades if the model is no longer being made. Not a reason to buy one but a nice surprise if it happens to you.
